PostHeaderIcon How do you become a Copywriter?

I love writing, I am sure I would be good at copywriting, I don’t have a degree right now and I don’t really want one. If I must get a degree what should it be in? Is just an Associates fine? How do you find copywriting jobs and is it good work?
I would imagine networking would be important, but how do you find these people to network with and hire you!?
Thank you!

Hi There,

I applaud your interest in copywriting. Infact that was my first job in the advertising industry. However I got the job after being noticed as a freelance copywriter. I did not get to become a copywriter immediately, nor did i have a degree at that time. I was an associate to do the first cut in my native language and i was sort of like the intern.

All advertising must consist of 3 major items, copy, art and marketing concept. Usually the copy or art takes the lead after digesting the clients brief.

It is fun but hard work and you need a great partners to produce fantastic advertising. It is really a satisfiying job if everything fall in place, however tensions can ride high most times. The pay will be good in due time and only if you are good. It is such in the ad industry, all strating pay suck until you gain more experience and move up. Time however is never fixed for progress. It is how you handle it and how it is perceived.

A note for you, when you write a copy, it is not for you, it is always or the target market, so what can sound witty and interestesting may be deemed as boring by the target audience.

Get some copywriting job freelance first, perhaps registering on guru.com and doing some freelance job there will help you gain some experience and build your portfolio. Do not charge too high for the job until you have some quality work under your belt. With that you can probably apply or even get noticed by the agencies.

Some writers are better at certain product categories then others. While some generalist are better at doing quick passable copies. All of these types are needed in an agency. WHat agecies don’t need is the slow ones that takes ages to write a copy. So try and practice writing faster.

Good luck mate and i hope you can realise your dreams.

PostHeaderIcon What is the better choice for someone who wants to work overseas?

I have been planning to work overseas and have some options I think will have opportunities for me, and that is New Zealand, Canada, Australia and Switzerland.

I’ve done a bit of browsing around. New Zealand is looking mainly for IT people and teachers. Canada is looking for caregivers. What I was told abt Switzerland is they may require you to shell out100s and thousands of dollars to work there unless u already have an employer who is willing to sponsor you, and I think that is the case pretty much everywhere these days considering the crisis.

I’ve also checked on the Australian government site and they have dropped some industry job opportunities due to their economy, one is construction. I am not sure if I still have a chance if I get into housekeeping, esp. in Brisbane.

I’m looking for a job opportunity that has to do with housekeeping. I have 2 years experience (and ongoing) in copywriting but I do not think anyone out there would sponsor me for that kind of job nor is it in demand re: overseas workers/immigrants.

I graduated from an Australian university, completed a bachelor’s degree. At that time I hadn’t thought of staying in another country but complicated situations are forcing me to work overseas…I don’t have experience or educational background on hotels or healthcare but am willing to take courses that will enable me to work in the countries mentioned. But my ultimate goal is to apply for citizenship in any of those countries mentioned, as I can’t live my life here anymore.

Pls, if you want to help, give me an idea where to start… I’m not asking for assumptions of what I might be going through or rude comments…I just really need some recommendations what I can do from now on…thank you…

Go to Canada and take any job you can get. Study in the evenings and weekends and when the economy improves you will be available to take advantage of it.

PostHeaderIcon How do I go about copywriting a book or name?

You cannot copyright a name or the title of the book, only it’s contents. When the book is published (and if you have written one the odds are not the good), then the work will automatically be copyrighted. Just placing that little c inside a circle doesn’t do it, as one poster stated. Your work is not automatically copyrighted until it is published.

PostHeaderIcon Would you hire me? I'm a freelance copywriter and have been for two years?

I have experience in various industries - from pharmaceuticals to education. I produce direct mail pieces, optimize websites, write press releases, and even produce videos - an experience earned from my television news days.

I feel like I'm stuck now in such a dead-end position! I got myself into a contracted position with a place I hate, and while everyone praises me up and down, I feel unchallenged and underpaid. I'm just not happy with them, but they provide a large chunk of my overall income.

Does anyone have advice?

Oh boy, if you have skills as a copywriter you can create your own income.

I would frequent http://www.michelfortin.com/ and perhaps join his membership site, thecopydoctor.com.

You can produce an instant income by creating a WSO ( Warrior Special Offer ) on warriorforum.com . You need an account first and you need to contribute to the board before running a WSO, but .. there is a crying need for copywriters. If you offered to do a sales letter for $120 to $500 you'll get a few sales there.

Build your business by referral and of course, using your copywriting skills.

Here's the thing, don't position yourself in the minds of others as "needing work" or "desperate for money". That is a big turnoff. Instead spin your copywriting skills and talk them up. Come from a position of strength and you'll do well.

Another person to align yourself with is Ray Edwards:

Also…

If you want to copywrite as a ghost copywriter for someone that has lots of business, approach Eric Louviere. He gets the work, farms it out, then checks it over to make sure it's in his style. He may want you to take his course first, but it would be worth it.

PostHeaderIcon copywriting laws on borrowing photographs for facebook groups?

hello. If I took a photo off the internet (for example, yahoo) and posted it on a group as an example of what the group is about, is there anything I could say in the description that would make it legal to do so? for example… " I claim no rights to these photographs"? Hope that makes sense.
can I just add that the pictures I have posted on the group are public pictures of our local town. Not nessisarily Photographs. Does this make any difference?

You are not "borrowing" a photograph for use elsewhere.
You are STEALING it.

Unless there are terms associated with the picture which state that they are free for everyones use anywhere then you have to get the permission of the photographer (copyright owner) to use them or post them elsewhere.
